Planning in Practice: Negotiating Successful Estate Regeneration
Panel: Hannah David - Planning Futures (chair); Malcolm Wood - Project Director, Vistry Group; Tim Goodwin - Regen. manager, Sovereign Network Group; Alice Lester - Operational Director Regeneration, Growth and Employment, LB Brent; Patrick Grincell - Director, hgh Consulting.
With the Secretary of State Michael Gove’s latest package of investment announcements and the ongoing desperate need for housing in London, estate regeneration continues to be in the forefront of the news.
By its very nature, successful estate regeneration involves engaging with all of the complexities of the existing urban ecosystem. From complex patterns of land ownership and established land uses to local infrastructure and utility networks and established communities’, Councils, Housing Associations and their developer partners must weave their new schemes into the existing urban fabric with the support of local residents to be successful.
This involves bringing together a wide range of stakeholders, often with diverse interests, in order to negotiate a shared vision for a place renewed.
This event will explore the role of planners in making this negotiation as productive as possible. It will consider best practice in working with existing residents, businesses, social housing providers, as well as with different tiers of government, and the barriers to overcome in order to deliver sustainable regenerated communities smoothly and with the buy-in of all concerned.
The panel features a range of experienced stakeholders in regeneration from private sector developers, social housing, local authorities and planning consultancies.
We will explore:
- What is required for meaningful community engagement?
- What barriers are faced and what do we need to overcome in order to deliver sustainable regeneration projects?
- How can the sector liaise with Local Planners to make the approval process more efficient?
